COMPANY HISTORY

After almost a decade of traveling around the world, Avi Gitler returned to his native NYC in 2011 and began to exhibit some of the artworks he had acquired during his travels through a series of pop-up exhibitions.

From 2012-2013, the company operated out of a commercial space in Long Island City with walls built from found pallets. It continued to present pop-ups including it’s first project outside of NYC during Art Basel Miami.

In 2014, the company opened it’s first permanent space, a 300 square foot gallery on Broadway, between 149th and 150th in Upper Manhattan.

In the Fall of that same year, the first Audubon Mural is created.

2015: At the suggestion of the artist Layqa Nuna Yawar, the company paints its first large scale mural, a very unexpected pivot.

2016 is all business: the company employs two people, Gitler & Heller, and produces thirteen exhibitions, twenty eight public art installations and oversees various corporate installs.

2017: Camp David is acquired, and our informal art residency begins.

2018: The Audubon Mural Project depicts it's 100th species in NYC.

Camp David guest house is completed for artist residency in 2020.

2019: about 5 years after opening uptown, and after:

48 solo shows and installations, 3 two-person shows, 9 group exhibitions…

….the uptown gallery closes.

Ove the course of the summer of 2021 the company takes over a building in Santa Barbara, CA, presenting 7 exhibitions, and hosting an artist residency.

2022: Les Murs D'Audubon, a European companion project to Audubon Mural Project produces murals of climate threatened birds all over Europe.

In 2023 lumber Milling begins at Camp David, and a timber frame mill house is completed, beginning a new era of building for both the property and the company, with a long term goal of creating a wood sculpting focused artist residency.

2024: The Tower is completed at Camp David, made almost entirely out of milled lumber and recycled wood from a deconstructed barn. It is the second guest house available to artists on the property. The first large scale event at Camp David, the Drawing Invitational takes place in the Fall.

    • Originally from Washington Heights, Avi fell in love with art while in high school, around the time when he first started buying prints with money he made working at an Upper West Side Deli. His art education is completely self-taught, starting with trips to New York's countless great museums, and continuing during a decade of world travel. Art and travel are still core components at the company and along with Avi’s experience working construction make up the 3 primary drivers which play roles in most of the companies projects
